Letters to Michelle Obama, Bill Gates, Brad Tilden and Other Important People

Update: Chloe recieved a response from Alaska Airlines! You can view the letter that came in the mail at the bottom of this post.

Our "Letters to Michelle Obama (Or Someone Else Important)" workshop is definitely one of our most popular. Maybe because we have a cardboard cutout of the First Lady, or maybe because students love having their voices heard by someone they believe can influence change.

In this workshop, students research local and global issues that matter to them and write a letter to the First Lady (or someone else important) explaining their concerns. Then we send the completed letters to White House, state capitol, or wherever they want it to go.

This year, we added another element to this workshop: working with the students to create Sway pages showcasing their work. Click through the links below to see each student's Sway (really, truly created by each student themselves! ... with a little help from our volunteers):

Sophie – Dear Mr. Gates (change how Microsoft uses energy)

Nanda – Dear Ms. Obama (more gym time)

Tuyletam – Dear First Lady Michelle Obama (kid and eco friendly)

Mia – Dear Michelle Obama (Global Warming: enemies and solutions)

Chloe – Dear Brad Tilden (getting sick on airplanes)

Lydia – Dear First Lady (more energizer bunny running)

Alex – Dear Mayor Murray (real cheese, please)

Antonio – To the Honorable Michelle Obama (better school lunches)

Abner – Dear Mr. President (horrible situation, aka school lunches)

Zoe – Dear President Barack Obama (littering is bad!)

Jenna – Dear Governor Jay Inslee (get rid of Daylight Savings Time)

Update: Chloe recieved a response from Alaska Airlines! She was concerned about herself and other passengers getting sick on airplanes. Here's what Cory Berkey, the Customer Care Specialist at Alaska Airlines, told Chloe:
