After-School Tutoring

We offer tutoring, homework help and writing enrichment clubs throughout the school year. Trained volunteers are here to help with individual writing projects and all kinds of homework including math, science, and foreign languages. Please click here to read our F.A.Q.

After-School Tutoring

Come for help with homework, to write, read, and research. Yes, we are a writing center, but we also have math tutors on site during tutoring sessions, and we try to accommodate the sciences, foreign languages, and other academic needs.

We offer tutoring Monday–Thursday throughout the school year based on the calendar of Seattle Public Schools. (Monday through Thursday, 2nd - 8th grade: 2:30 - 5:30 / high school  6:00 - 8:00)

To get started, all students must register with us.  Please print and fill out the registration form and bring it to BFI headquarters during tutoring hours. High School Tutoring can bring the completed form to BFI on the first day you drop in, or fill out a form when you arrive.  You can also stop by to register. A parent or guardian must sign their student's tutoring form. New registration forms are required each school year for every student.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate everyone who wants to enroll, so we maintain a wait list. At BFI we strive to create an eclectic community of learners from all walks of life, which requires a fairly complicated algorithm. We do try to keep families together and welcome their neighbors. Because many children enjoy our services year after year, we have less space for newcomers, but every year we welcome some new families. Please sign up and we’ll be in touch!

We also offer a variety of writing workshops, which are free and open for all students (though they fill quickly, too!). Thank you for your interest!

Monday–Thursday, 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Pre-Registration REQUIRED

Monday–Thursday, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
If you are in high school, dropping in is okay, but we will ask you to register on your first visit.

For more information, please visit our F.A.Q. page.

Other Reasons to Stop By

Students can also join us if they simply need a welcoming place to do homework, to read a book, use our computers for internet research, or work on their own writing projects (perhaps for future publication in a Fearless Ideas anthology or the Student Work section of our web site!).

During 2nd–8th Grade Tutoring, students are welcome to participate in our daily clubs such as pen-pals, songwriting, and journalism.

High school students can expect to find enthusiastic tutors who are experts in advanced math, science, languages, and writing. Students are welcome to participate in writing clubs and other creative opportunities. Throughout the year, there are also opportunities to get help with SAT prep and college applications and essays.
